In the beginning there was the cloud. And it was good. But over time it can also be surprisingly expensive. If you?ve ever said ?Oh my god,? at the end of your billing cycle, you?re may be starting to think about putting boundaries on this virtual Eden. Yet you?ll quickly find that public cloud vice is hard to stamp out. It?s ingrained into human nature and finds its expression through self-service IaaS delivery and opaque billing processes. Here are a few of the sins we?ve seen.

Skype for Windows Phone sheds beta title, graduates to v1.0
Skype’s fledgling Windows Phone app broke out of beta today, adding contact searching and landline calling to it’s VOIP repertoire. The update comes just shy of two months of the Beta’s introduction in February, and boasts a handful of minor improvements that should keep your calls connected. You’ll still be making those calls yourself, however, as the full version doesn’t yet have support for receiving calls in the background — if the app isn’t running, your phone isn’t ringing. Walmart to unleash its Vudu magic on South America, Europe, Asia
Walmart’s Vudu service will be dipping a toe in foreign waters for the first time, with a planned expansion that could see it landing in as many as 30 new countries. Mexico will be the first to get the service — some time in June — before it continues in a southerly direction toward other Latin American states. The rest of the expansion will cover Europe (including the UK and Ireland) and Asia, but won’t happen until later on in the year. While Netflix has already beaten a path away from US shores, Walmart clearly hopes its strong retail presence (5000 stores in 26 countries) will help it earn more than just a tourist visa.

Record Store Day: earth’s vinyl days
On?April 21,?the fifth annual?Record Store Day?will get off to a rockin’ start when doors open in about 1,000 record stores in some 20 countries.
You remember records, right? Not only are the big 12-inch albums and 7-inch 45s still among us, but so are their landlords, old-fashioned independent record stores, which celebrate their own special day every spring. On April 21, the fifth annual Record Store Day will get off to a rockin’ start when doors open in about 1,000 record stores in some 20 countries.

From Tulsa to Tokyo, San Diego to Sydney, the gritty neighborhood purveyors of the petroleum platter will party with contests, free giveaways, in-store performances by local faves and big stars, and exclusive limited-edition 45 and LP releases. Among those are new singles by Coldplay, Florence + the Machine, Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire, comedian Jimmy Fallon, and many more. Exclusive Record Store Day LPs will include new 12-inch vinyl pressings from Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and The Black Keys, and rarities from jazz icons Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck.
Billboard magazine attributed a seismic 182,000 unit sales to last April’s Record Store Day. Rocker Jack White exhorts the rock troops to “show respect for the tangible music that you’ve dedicated your careers and lives to, and help It from becoming nothing more than disposable digital data.”
And speaking of analog, music producer Gary Calamar and Billboard writer Phil Gallo have penned a 240-page companion piece to the annual event, Record Store Days: From Vinyl to Digital and Back Again. It combines a timeline of the evolution of recording media ? from Edison’s wax cylinders to today’s MP3 files ? with affectionate portraits and reminiscences of America’s iconic record shops and chains, some now defunct, some just plain funky. We meet up in the listening booth at Hollywood’s long-gone Wallich’s Music City to spin the latest from Nat King Cole and Elvis Presley before skipping a half century ahead to pack in like sardines with adoring fans at an in-store performance by Sir Paul McCartney at Amoeba Music, the largest record store in the world. (It’s also known as “Godzilla” by the scores of indie record stores it has driven out of business.)

Cobra Starship Ham It Up On First Date

An interview with Cobra Starship ought to come with a warning: Once the cameras start recording, throw away anything you’d previously prepared, because Gabe Saporta and Co. are card-carrying hams.
Anyone who’s familiar with members Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez’s takes as “Dick Bagwell” and “Vincent Twice (Vincent Twice),” respectively, in our Musical March Madness videos of years past knows how invested they can become in adopted personages (to say nothing of Blackinton’s other alias, Guy Ripley), but I was just as happy to learn that their authentic selves were just as animated. Between us: Now that I’ve gotten a bit of distance from the situation, I can also admit that as a female who grew up in early aughts Manhattan, I was pretty excited to go out on a (albeit, synthesized reality) date with the lead singer of my beloved Midtown — the band which upon its demise was how Cobra Starship was born.
“I needed a band and … you were like the first people I asked,” Saporta said, regarding his reaching out to Suarez and Blackinton, who were once in a band together called This is Ivy League.
Suarez added, “Gabe was like, ‘Hey, look, I’m starting this new band. You guys should come and be a part of it. I would love to have you guys. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Not willing to let go of the good thing his band with Blackinton amounted to, “[Suarez] said no at first,” Saporta solemnly remembered about his first shot at getting a new band together.
Eventually, the pair obviously came around, and alongside Victoria Asher and Nate Novarro, Starship have become a pop-rock behemoth, known for big choruses and dance floor-ready tracks. So, it only made sense to take Suarez and Saporta to the Village Party Store on our First Date. Surely, the makers of party music would feel at home at the party store, right?
My suspicions were confirmed. And between learning how to host a “gritty” party to being branded with a Cobra temporary tattoo down my right forearm, it’s safe to say that the group brings the party wherever they go.

Jon Jones has a new respect for Rashad Evans; why you should, too
After defending the UFC light heavyweight belt on Saturday over Rashad Evans, Jon Jones said he had a new respect for his former training partner and friend.
“I would say Rashad is my toughest fight to date, and a lot of it is because of how talented and awesome of a fighter he is,” Jones said after beating Evans in a five-round decision.
Since winning and defending the title, Jones has finished former champs Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, and Lyoto Machida. Evans is the first fighter ever to force Jones into the fifth round, and the first fighter to require judges’ cards since Stephan Bonnar in 2009. Evans was wobbled several times throughout the fight, but was still standing for the final horn.
Somehow, there were still fans who were unsatisfied with Saturday’s main event. On Cagewriter’s Facebook page, one reader said Evans had no heart. Another called the fight boring, while another claimed Evans didn’t want the fight.
Seriously?
Evans trained for months and months to face a man he once called his friend. He cut down his weight, went through countless interviews, had cameras follow him around incessantly for “Primetime,” then traveled to Atlanta and got in a cage with someone who is considered one of the world’s best fighters. He withstood elbows, punches and kicks for 25 minutes. At the end of it all, he lost, but was still standing.
And there are actually fans who think Evans did not want to be in there? For the final word on the subject, let’s hear from the great Baltimore boxer (and fictional character), Dennis “Cutty” Wise.
